Reality as I know it: In April 1994 when I returned from China, I went to see the police officer to get the last book, the Road Code, that Gu Cheng was reading in the car park, and the last four letters he wrote at that time. The police confirmed that the hatchet (not axe) found near the scene was not relevant - it was not necessary to determine what had been used because both were already dead. The point is that I agreed Xie Ye died as a result of Gu Cheng's action. I was the only person near the event and there is no tangible evidence that links Gu Cheng directly to Xie Ye's death. This was horrendous but since Gu Cheng died first "murder" is not the right word to describe the event. This is the reality. Because this is both really painful and the most painful of anything for me, I do not want to touch it. I find it is so painful to write. I did write it once in Chinese and thought that was enough; written in February 1994 it was published in Chinese titled as, "The Last 14 days of Gu Cheng: What I faced", and is now on the Internet but still in Chinese. Now I realise that if I avoid talking, misinformation will become the "truth" and the resource for future accounts. I still feel it is unbelievable. On the last day we were talking together in my house. About 1.00pm Gu Cheng asked Xie Ye for the car key, so he could practice driving and waited for Xie Ye so they could go together as usual to see their child. I did not see any sign of the event that would occurred. He was planning to study typing, English etc. and was organising the next steps of his life. Xie Ye left me about 10 minutes later. But then Gu Cheng remained in the car park by himself waiting for her return. From the letters he wrote it is clear that he was waiting for Xie Ye to return so he could see the child for his last time. Whatever it was, happened a bit before 4.00pm. He came back to me and said (in Chinese), "I beat Xie Ye" and told me where she was. As I rushed to her he suicided. I called the ambulance. The attendant even said "She should be right". Gu Cheng was I still feel it is unbelievable. Sincerely Gu Xiang |
